Endorsement: Danny Goad for 6th District Chair

I and others here at the VA Social Conservative endorse Danny Goad for chair of the 6th District. He has served with distinction as the Giles County Chair, the Botetourt Vice-Chair, a Hampton School Board member, and as a campaign coordinator. Unlike many in the party, he has been successful in recruiting & training new people. I for one - am proof of this. Through his leadership in the Botetourt party, he has been a beacon for Constitutional principles throughout the 6th district.

Danny Goad will work to hold our elected Representatives accountable to the principles expressed in the Republican Creed. Danny Goad will encourage true conservative Republicans to compete for the nomination against RINO’S and moderate Republicans.

His opponent says she knows no liberal Republicans.

Danny Goad says we need to strongly support PRO-LIFE Legislators like Bob Marshall that sponsor Pro-Life legislation like the “Personhood” bill and find competition for all legislators who say they are pro-life but are pro-life in word only.

His opponent says referring to Republican legislators if you agree with me 80 percent of the time you are my friend and I don’t care if you’re Pro-Choice. This is in spite of the fact two Republicans defeated Bob Marshall’s personhood bill this year in sub-committee.

Danny Goad believes the grassroots can only be effective from the bottom-up not the top-down. Danny Goad takes marching orders from you the citizens and Principles of the Constitution and not the leadership of the party. Danny Goad will make the Sixth District responsive to the Grassroots.

His opponent when questioned about the intention of a politician said, “I know he will do what is best for us. He has our best interests at heart”.

Danny Goad believes the Republican Party is at its best when it is not fearful of mentioning or honoring God our Creator. God has endowed us with our fundamental rights.

Danny Goad promotes the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment was adopted for two purposes: self defense and to defend ourselves against a tyrannical government.
It was not adopted by our Founding Fathers so that we could all go duck or white-tailed deer hunting. If it was adopted to preserve duck hunting, our Founding Fathers would have had an amendment proclaiming our Right to Keep and Bear a Fishing Rod.

The Rubio WIN in Today’s Debate

"Charlie Crist avoided debating Marco Rubio for almost year – and now we know why!

This morning's debate was a clear victory for Marco Rubio as he showed why he is the only candidate in this Senate race that can be trusted to go to Washington, stand up to the Obama-Pelosi-Reid-Meek agenda and offer a clear alternative. On the other hand, because Charlie Crist had no vision, record or conservative principles to promote, he did what politicians do – distort and attack.

Floridians were able to see the clear policy differences that exist between Marco Rubio and Charlie Crist.

See for yourself here.

The record is clear. Whether it's the stimulus, cap-and-trade, ObamaCare or raising taxes, Charlie Crist's unhealthy appetite for bigger government is out of step with mainstream Floridians. His insistence on distorting Marco Rubio's record is a disservice to millions of Floridians who are tired of the politics-as-usual that Charlie Crist insists on peddling. Marco Rubio has a proven record of standing up to liberal agendas: whether it's being a consistent voice against the Obama/Pelosi agenda in Washington DC or stopping Charlie Crist's liberal agenda in Tallahassee by blocking his efforts to expand gambling or stopping the Crist cap and trade mandate.

Now it's time to stand with the ONLY conservative in this race we can trust to stand up to the dangerous liberal agenda happening in Washington right now. We need you to stand with Marco today by contributing to his campaign. And share this highlight from the debate with your friends. Tell them why you are supporting Marco.

Together, each of us can make a difference and put this country back on the right track by electing principled conservative leaders like Marco Rubio!

Thank you for your support,

Team Rubio

P.S. - Senator Jim Demint joined in watching the debate and had this to say after – we think it summed up pretty well and hope you share his enthusiasm as we move to the next level in this campaign.

Special note from Jim Demint: 'Like many Republicans across the country, I watched today's debate with great interest. With every passing day, my support for Marco Rubio grows stronger and more enthusiastic. Today's debate showed exactly why more and more Republicans are excited by the conservative renewal that's building in Florida because of Marco's candidacy.'"

Endorsement: Doug Gimbert for Botetourt Chair

Current Botetourt chair, Doug Gimbert is running for re-election. In Gimbert's 4-year tenure as chair, Gilmore was the only candidate to loose the county. The local party has grown considerably under Gimbert's leadership despite his opponent suggesting that we need to get back to growing the party - as if it weren't growing! Gimbert is a principled, constitutional conservative. As such he has done a marvelous job of representing the the grassroots - not power brokers in the party. His role in backing now Senator Ralph Smith v. the incumbent Brandon Bell in the state senate primary showed his willingness to support principle v. an establishment candidate that broke campaign promises. This is courage few men have. It is my opinion, if the party had more men like Gimbert it would be a better place - and so would America! Listen to the debate between Gimbert & Broughton here.

Fimian Vows to Repeal Pelosi-Connolly Healthcare Bill

Fairfax, VA – Keith Fimian, Republican candidate for Congress (VA-11) released the following statement in response to Congress passing the Democrats' healthcare legislation:

"The American people have repeatedly rejected the Democrats' plan to force a government takeover of healthcare and put 1/6 of our nation's economy under government control," Fimian said. "Gerry Connolly has cast his lot with Nancy Pelosi, against the will of his constituents and the American people.

This disastrous healthcare legislation, loaded with backroom deals, special interest giveaways, mandates and $569 billion in tax hikes, will explode an already catastrophic deficit, destroy jobs, and devastate the best healthcare system in the world," Fimian said. "When I am elected to Congress, I will immediately introduce legislation to repeal this bill.

"Republicans offered real solutions to the problems with our healthcare system, but they were rejected. It is clear that Pelosi and Connolly aren't interested in truly fixing problems with our healthcare system, but only in achieving an agenda-driven outcome and declaring a political victory," Fimian added.

The $1.2 trillion price tag includes over $569 billion in tax increases, new taxes on middle class families making $66,000 or more per year, $53 billion in raids on social security, and $200 billion in cuts to Medicare for seniors. It also sends $436 billion directly to insurance companies. The IRS will need to hire 16,500 new workers just to enforce all the new taxes and penalties this legislation will bring.

"Our health care system is the best in the world because it fosters competition, innovation and excellence, and consumers have real choices regarding their medical care. By no means is it perfect, but we should work to improve what we have by addressing wellness, one of healthcare's most central issues, by lowering the cost of insurance through increased competition, by addressing portability, by allowing insurance to be purchased across state lines, and by pursuing tort reform that eliminates frivolous law suits that drive up the cost of medical care," Fimian said. "I look forward to implementing these solutions in Congress and repealing this disastrous legislation Democrats have forced on the American people.

What about Bart Stupak?

The one who failed us. You realize we would have had 216 if he and his "block" hadn't of switched their votes under the guise of a "pro-life Executive Order".

Problems with the Executive Order:

- It can be undone with a second Executive order at any time.
- It doesn't last beyond President Obama's term.

For Stupak to actually fall into the trap of believing that any good will come from the Order, proves that he is not as smart as we all hailed him as.

RedState has suggested sending Stupak a "parting gift" - and I completely agree. Check it out HERE.

"As soon as the ink is dry..."

Cooch pledges to file suit against the healthcare bill "as soon as the ink is dry..."

"Why file so quickly? Gottstein: 'It's more cost efficient to start the process of challenging the bill as soon as possible. There are significant costs in implementing the healthcare law, so if it is going to be found unconstitutional, then we can save taxpayer money and trouble by making that determination sooner rather than later.'"

Health Care Reform Vote Today... UPDATES

Schedule for the day... *note: "Deem and Pass" has been shot down by Dem. leadership and will not be used.

1pm - House Convenes

5-6pm - "Rules" vote: If the House clears the rule, they can move on to the next of the three important votes that will take place today.

8pm - Senate Bill vote: Note that for this vote and the next, the Minority and Majority leaders will actually be managing their respective sides when the bill hits the floor. This is unusual, as normally, the committee chairs do the honor.

9pm - Reconciliation Bill vote: After the Reconciliation vote, look for an unrelated vote, as you never want to end the day on a controversial bill in case of a miscount or other hiccup that may require Congressmen to be present for a recount. It wouldn't be good for half of the Congressmen to be boarding planes to head back home when you decide you need a recount!

For more interesting facts and tips on how to understand the procedures going on today, I would recommend going to "The Hitchhiker's Guide to Healthcare".

Also, watch LIVE what happens on the Hill on CSPAN.

UPDATE 4:02pm: Bart Stupak has reached a middle ground with the President who declared that he would sign an executive order which would clarify the abortion language in the bill, therefore Stupak and his "block" have switched their votes to "yes". TEXT HERE.

UPDATE 7:08pm: Rules passed 224 yea, 206 nay. Roll Call HERE.

UPDATE 10:47pm: Senate version of bill passed 219 yea, 212 nay. Roll Call HERE.

UPDATE 11:04pm: Voting on Motion to Recommit HR 4872.

UPDATE 11:07pm: Motion to Recommit failed.

UPDATE 11:35pm: Reconciliation Bill passed 220 yea, 211 nay.

Abortion and the Healthcare Debate

In the last few days the Democrats have made through on their promise to do "whatever it takes" to pass healthcare. They were willing to start an ethics investigation into and drive out a member of their own party who opposed healthcare, and now seem willing to make a possibly unconstitutional rules change to get it through as well.

The backdrop of this Democrat desperation is that all they have to do is pass a bill through a legislative body (The House of Representatives) in which they have a 40 vote majority. If that were such a good and important bill this wouldn't be that hard.

With an impending vote it seems the one person who is doing the most to stand up for the unborn, and get Democrats to vote against the bill is Bart Stupak. Since the current bill does not include the Stupak Amendment, Bart Stupak and a group of 6-12 other Democrats who voted yes last time have committed to vote no on the bill. Confident that he had the votes to stop the bill, Rep. Stupak announced it was dead on arrival when it was first announced that Nancy Pelosi was trying to pass the Senate version of the Healthcare bill.

Since then Rep. Stupak has tried to get the House leadership to include his amendment on this version of the bill. However the leadership is ignoring him and is working to pass the bill without fixing the abortion language. The Democrat laeadership seems ready to ignore the concerns of its pro-life members, and doesn't seem to care about protecting human life.

If Obamacare passes, Stupak says, it could signal the end of any meaningful role for pro-life Democrats within their own party. “It would be very, very hard for someone who is a right-to-life Democrat to run for office,” he says. “I won’t leave the party. I’m more comfortable here and still believe in a role within it for the right-to-life cause, but this bill will make being a pro-life Democrat much more difficult. They don’t even want to debate this issue. We’ll probably have to wait until the Republicans take back the majority to fix this.”

“Throughout this debate, even when the House leaders have acknowledged us, it’s always been in a backhanded way,” he laments. “I’m telling the others to hold firm, and we’ll meet next week, but I’m disappointed in my colleagues who said they’d be with us and now they’re not. It’s almost like some right-to-life members don’t want to be bothered. They just want this over.”

Sadly we have hardly heard a peep about the abortion aspect of the healthcare bill from the Republican leadership recently. There has been a lot of talk about mandates, medicare, and costs (which are all very important), but by ignoring the abortion aspect they are leaving a very important argument against the bill off the table. Hopefully this is not a signal on how the Republicans plan to campaign this year, because if they ignore the abortion issue they will be hurt this fall. Pro-lifers are important activists and voters who will work hard for whoever they believe will protect the unborn, and they should not be ignored by the GOP during this election cycle.

It will be interesting to see how the next couple days turn out. There is currently a vote scheduled for Thursday. However many including the Democrat House Whip say the votes are not there yet. It also appears the Slaughter Rule is not off the table yet.

For an updated whipcount check this out, and please contact your congressman to urge them to vote no.

OpEd on Cuccinelli

Kudos to Cuccinelli

The global-warming crowd is acting like members of a farcical religion, complete with a priesthood threatening planetary doom on those who refuse to render sacrifice. The sacrifice being demanded of Virginia is her economy, so I'm relieved that state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is asking the priesthood for a little hard science before he binds that offering to the altar ("Cuccinelli fights the EPA," Opinion, Feb. 22).

In December, the federal Environmental Protection Agency issued a finding that global warming poses a threat to human life. In so doing, it opened the door to new regulations that could drop a staggering burden on Virginia's already limping economy.

The EPA based its finding on core data provided by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Not long after the EPA published its findings, "Climategate" broke, and we learned that the research undergirding global warming has long been doctored and scientific dissent silenced.

What's more, the IPCC itself admitted to a "very small number of errors." Among its mistakes: A pronouncement that the Himalayan glaciers will disappear by 2035 is off by about 300 years, and the fear of North African crop production being cut in half by 2020 has no basis in fact.

Mr. Cuccinelli - trained as an engineer as well as a lawyer - has filed a petition requesting that the EPA restart the regulatory process and conduct its own research rather than rely on the IPCC's tainted data. Rather than bashing Mr. Cuccinelli as regressive and anti-science, Virginians should give the attorney general credit for challenging the agency and demanding objective data.

After all, we've got time. The Himalayan glaciers aren't going anywhere for a while.

Cuccinelli: A Man For the People

As we've watched people, from both sides of the aisle, participate in the bashing and accusations that have been hurled at Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli because of his involvement in "discrimination", most of us have been appalled. But let me make something clear - Ken isn't the kind of person to enact any legislation for personal gain. He listens to his constituents and follows the law. Below is his letter addressing the accusations -

"I firmly believe that the commonwealth's colleges and universities comprise the best public university system in the nation. A proud product of that system, I feel that the controversy over my recent statement of Virginia law as it relates to nondiscrimination policies at our state institutions of higher learning deserves to be addressed.

While it is understandable that some are angry or confused about that statement of law, it is important to recognize it for what it was and remains. It is my permanently and long-held belief that government should not single out anyone for negative treatment.

Each day, more than 200 dedicated attorneys and staff work in the Office of the Attorney General to provide guidance, advice, and counsel to agencies impacting every aspect of the life of Virginians, from transportation to health care to public safety to education. Part of that job is advising state agencies that might be inadvertently taking actions not authorized by the law of the commonwealth. Much like local governments that are subject to the so-called Dillon Rule, public colleges and universities have only the powers granted to them by the General Assembly.

Over the past six weeks, I received a number of inquiries about the inclusion of sexual orientation as a specially protected class in the nondiscrimination polices of our colleges and universities. A review of the law and the opinions of no less than five of my predecessors -- Democrats and Republicans alike -- demonstrated that any decision regarding the creation of a specially protected class belongs exclusively to the General Assembly. A public university simply lacks the power to create a new specially protected class under Virginia law.

While our colleges and universities are governed by Boards of Visitors with broad rights and powers, those powers are not unlimited. Virginia's public universities are, at all times, subject to the control of the General Assembly. They have no authority greater than that which has been granted them by the General Assembly. As the attorney for the public colleges and universities, and for the commonwealth as a whole, I provided legal advice reflecting the law as it is.

As a legal matter, this statement of Virginia law has not been seriously challenged. While issues related to sexual orientation are among the most emotional and controversial, they do not change this fundamental proposition of Virginia law. My now well-publicized letter simply stated the current state of Virginia law; it did not advocate for any particular legislative position. Should the General Assembly change the law, my advice will be consistent with it.

The General Assembly has considered and defined the protected classes for purposes of nondiscrimination statutes. It has specifically defined unlawful discrimination at educational institutions. The Virginia Human Rights Act states that it is the policy of the commonwealth to "safeguard all individuals within the Commonwealth from unlawful discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, age, marital status, or disability, in places of public accommodation, including educational institutions." In addition to this affirmative statement, the General Assembly has on numerous occasions, including this session, considered and rejected creating a protected class defined by sexual orientation. No state agency can reach beyond such clearly established boundaries.

Nothing I have said or written authorizes unconstitutional discrimination against any person.
My letter in no way addresses the legislative issue of including sexual orientation in non-discrimination policies. I believe that our colleges and universities do not illegally discriminate against any class of persons. Likewise, I do not believe they can or will after my restatement of Virginia law.

The people of the commonwealth, through their elected representatives, determine Virginia's laws. I cannot bend the law to fit a particular outcome, no matter what a person or group might wish, myself included. I have simply stated what is and is not currently permissible under the laws of Virginia. That is my job as attorney general."

Del. Brenda Pogge Endorses Feda Morton for Congress

Today Feda Morton announced that she had received Del. Brenda Pogge's endorsement in her congressional race. Del. Pogge is one of the conservative leaders in the House of Delegates, and undeniably one of the most conservative women in the General Assembly. She knows how to stand by her principles and get legislation passed.

Republican Fifth District Congressional candidate Feda Morton has received the endorsement of State Delegate Brenda Pogge (R-96th). Delegate Pogge joins a growing list of influential conservative leaders throughout the Fifth District and the Commonwealth who are backing Morton's candidacy.

"Feda Morton is a conservative leader of principle who has worked tirelessly for decades leading on issues important to our movement. As a member of Congress, she will not only cast the right votes, but will be a leader on the issues that matter the most in putting our nation back on the right course. I predict she will be a leader in the mold of the late great Congresswomen Jo Ann Davis, for whom I worked with closely in the past."

"I am very thankful for the confidence and trust that Del. Pogge is entrusting in me and in our campaign", Morton said. "She knows that I will be an advocate for the citizens of the Fifth Congressional District", Morton said in response to Delegate Pogge's endorsement. Morton stated that her 20 years of experience working to build the conservative wing of the Republican Party is one of her key strengths that prompted Delegate Pogge to endorse her candidacy. "Delegate Pogge knows that I have been consistent in my conservative beliefs throughout my years as a builder of our party", Morton continued. "The positions that I have on the issues that our country is facing today are consistent with the beliefs that I have had throughout my adult life."

If you would like to help Feda Morton in her bid for congress please visit her website, and donate and encourage your friends in the 5th District to help her.

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli Combating Identity Theft

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States, and Attorney General Cuccinelli, along with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and 34 other states have taken action against LifeLock Inc, an identity theft protection provider that was not able to provide the security it promised its customers. Lifelock reached an agreement this week with the Virginia, FTC and other states after the company was investigated for allegedly purposefully misleading consumers.

The states and the FTC began jointly investigating LifeLock amid allegations that the company made a range of deceptive claims that misled consumers to believe its services were a "proven solution" that would protect against all forms of identity theft, including criminal, mortgage and child identity theft. The settlement also resolves allegations that the company misrepresented the nature of specific services it provided to protect or alert consumers when their personal information was compromised.

Virginia First State in the Nation to Pass Ban on Mandated Health Care Insurance

While Congress is caught up in a tumultuous debate over whether or not to undertake sweeping reform that would make it illegal to be without health insurance, Virginia this week made its stance on government health care mandates crystal clear: NO! The answer came in the form of HB 10, introduced by Delegate Bob Marshall, R-Manassas, and mirroring SB 417, patroned by Senator Jill Vogel, R- Upperville, which would block any government mandate that would require Virginia residents to have health insurance. Both received overwhelming bipartisan support. The Senate bill passed into law, while the House version is headed to Governor McDonnell's desk for his signature.

Virginia is the first state in the nation to pass any type of ban on mandated coverage, but more than thirty other states are following our lead with similar legislation pending.

These votes send a clear message to local Congressmen Boucher, D-9th, Nye, D-2nd, and Perriello, D-5th who are standing by to support Obama's healthcare legislation: the people back home in your district don't want Washington bureaucrats in charge of their health care. They also don't want the Commonwealth on the hook for one of the largest unfunded mandates in history.

A Possible Running Mate for Ron Paul?

While Ron Paul received a lot of attention for winning the CPAC straw poll, one person no one asks is who would be willing to run as his running mate if he won the nomination? I think we may have found that person...

Cuccinelli Follows the Law, While McDonnell Follows the Polls

Last week it was revealed that Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli sent a directive to the state universtities informing them they were stepping outside the bounds of the law to have non-discrimination policies that include sexual orientation. This created an immediate firestorm from both sides of the aisle. All the usual suspects yelled bigot, and turning back the clock, and sadly even Republicans came out against the Attorney General's call to obey the rule of law. A prominent College Republican leader (Cole Usry of Christopher Newport University) organized early protests against the Attorney General, and prominent Republican blogs have come out against the Attorney General. One blog even suggested he could kiss future political aspirations good buy as a result of this. Honestly the reaction to the Attorney General's decision has been heavily based on emotion. To my knowledge no one has made the case that Ken Cuccinelli is incorrect in his interpretation of the law. All this blowback resulted because Ken Cuccinelli made good on his campaign promise to "enforce the rule of law."

In response to this firestorm Governor Bob McDonnell is trying to placate the left by issuing "Executive Directive #1." First of all an executive directive is different from an executive order. This is a legally nonbinding statement reminding state agencies that “employment discrimination for any reason other than merit and ability has no place in state government”. The reaction to the Executive Directive has been generally positive, especially from the left. However the VA Family Foundation sent out an e-mail expressing their concern with the directive and noted as troubling the positive statements the ACLU made about it.

Probably the most stinging rebuke to the Governor came from a long time supporter, and social conservative leader, Dr. Mike Farris. Dr. Farris gave the Washington Post a very blunt statement on the issue.

"I think this action is incredibly disappointing, to the point of being shocking," said Michael P. Farris, the chancellor of Patrick Henry College, a private Christian college in Loudoun County. "The deeper message it sends is that people who think homosexuality is a sin are wrong. They are irrational."

Farris, a lawyer and constitutional scholar who ran for lieutenant governor in 1993, said he thinks McDonnell's policy statement will be used in courts to help challenge Virginia's constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, which McDonnell supported. "I don't think the people advising him were doing anything other than reading polls," Farris said.

I am proud of Ken Cuccinelli for standing up for the law no matter how politically incorrect it may be. I also have to side with Dr. Farris in expressing my disappointment in Governor McDonnell. If you can't stand up for traditional values when the law is on your side and the General Assembly is with you, when can you?

Let's hope the governor will follow through on his promise to defund Planned Parenthood. That is something he can do single handedly, and if he doesn't do that this year, can social conservatives ever hope he will fight for us?

UPDATE:: As always Tim Boyer, a good friend of this blog, is willing to call it like it is, and has some similar thoughts on this topic along with some thoughts on the possible political reasons for McDonnell's actions.

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli Defends the Scientific Process as he Challenges the EPA

In light of the recent climategate scandal Ken Cuccinelli is challenging the EPA to use scientifically verifiable data in its global warming regulations. Many are saying Cuccinelli opposes science, he is actually defending science by requesting that the EPA use the scientific method before imposing draconian regulations that would devestate Virginia's economy.

The Power of Ken Cuccinelli's Endorsement Part II

Some reason I feel like this story may have a lot of parts to it by the time the year is out...

In January we saw the importance of Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli's endorsement when his endorsement of Howie Lind in the 10th District Chairman Race lead to Jim Rich dropping out.

This past week we saw it in the LCRC Chairman race. Days before the vote the endorsement went public, and then he and his staff agressively contacted Loudoun voters on behalf Mark Sell. While Mark's team worked very hard, Ken's endorsement plaid a very big role in a close race that saw the sitting chairman and most of the executive board actively backing Candace Strother.

Ken Cuccinelli's endorsement is one that matters in party races and primaries, because he actively helps those he endorses and it pays off. If people want his endorsement in the future they need to stand with him now as he comes under attack for fighting for conservative principles. Standing with Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is the right thing to do and the politically smart thing to do.

Keith Fimian is Outpolling Gerry Connolly

For the past few cycles Keith Fimian has been outraising incuumbent Gerry Connolly for two consecutive fundraising quarters in the 11th district, and now news comes out that he is outpolling Connolly by 5% as well. In Keith Fimian we have a strong conservative who can fundraise and outpoll the incumbent. What else do you want in a congressional candidate?

Mark Sell Becomes LCRC Chairman as Loudoun Voters Reject the Politics of Demonization

I would like to take a moment to congratulate Mark Sell on winning the race for LCRC Chairman this past Saturday. He and Candace Strother ran very clean campaigns built around continuing to advance conservativism and continue the winning momentum in Loudoun. They were able to get almost 1,000 people to vote in the election and both campaign structures will be very useful in the years ahead.

Mark Sell is a committed conservative of both the fiscal and social variety. He worked very hard to pass the Marriage Amendment in 2006, and has attended as many Tea Party events as possible over the past year. He constantly volunteered with the door to door effort this past fall as he does every year for the Republican ticket, and received Ken Cuccinelli's endorsement. He knows how to campaign and recruit volunteers, and is committed to our conservative values. He will make an excellent chairman.

While Glen Caroline and Candace Strother have been very gracious in their congratulations to Mark Sell, some of Candace's supporters are very reluctant to unite behind Mark Sell after the vote. Some are taking a we will support him if... approach, (which I respect and understand) while one of Loudoun's most prominent bloggers has continued to show nothing but vitriol and hatred for Mark Sell and his supporters following the election.

The blogger I am talking about is Loudoun Insider. Following the election he wrote one of the most vile and divisive posts in his history. The day before the election he said that if you voted for Mark Sell you would be sending the LCRC back to the dark ages. In a comment on another post that day he called Mark a woman, and after the results came in he called Mark a name I will not repost on this blog. Using this kind of rhetoric about Mark and his top supporters does nothing to build the party. We can and should debate the merits of electing different people, and dig into what they believe, but name calling and ad hominem attacks of this sort have no place in the political dialogue. If you want to argue this party should be a big tent and an accepting party, then you are a hypocrite to demonize people who have worked hard in it over the years.

I am thankful to the voters of Loudoun for rejecting the politics of demonization, and I am thankful that Mark Sell's supporters refrained from this kind of personal mean spirited politics.

41st District LOST by 37 Votes

Kerry Bolognese lost the Delegate race in the 41st district tonight by a mere 37 votes. I'm sure this will be contested, but as it stands tonight, Eileen Filler-Corn has won the election.

Miss Me Yet?

Open Letter to President George W. Bush ... add your signature.

Dear President Bush:

On behalf of millions of Americans—many of whom are former critics—we are writing to say that we miss you. Although time is often kind to former presidents, something different is at work here.

While it usually takes 10 or more years for a good president to be appreciated for his contributions, in less than 18 months Americans of all political persuasions have begun to miss your strong leadership, no-nonsense foreign policy, and pride-filled vision of American exceptionalism. In the short time that you have been out of office, our country has sunk to an unprecedented low point, a state that exceeds even the "malaise" of the Jimmy Carter years.

Mr. President, thank you for recognizing the terrorist attacks on America for what they are—a declaration of war—and for treating them as such. Thank you for having the foresight to recognize the situations in Afghanistan and Iraq for what they are and for having the courage to do what had to be done in those troubled countries.

Thank you for understanding the need for indefinite detention of enemy combatants at Guantanamo Bay and for supporting military tribunals rather than civilian trials.

Thank you for two tax cuts during your presidency and for the fifty-three months of job creation and economic growth that resulted. Thank you for showing that you love America and were willing to do what was necessary to protect us from those who don't. Finally, thank you for making us proud to be Americans.

Mr. President, we miss you. When we see President Obama apologize for America, we miss your unapologetic patriotism. When we hear President Obama respond to problems and threats with empty words, we miss your steadfastness and willingness to act. When we see President Obama grovel and bow before foreign heads of state, we miss seeing you stand tall as the undisputed leader of the free world.

When we saw President Obama receive the Nobel Peace Prize, we were reminded that the words in his acceptance speech parroted what he has criticized you for saying. As we watch an increasingly dangerous Iran brutalize its own people and thumb its nuclear-tipped nose at the world, we remember that peace comes through strength not talking, bowing, or apologizing—something you understood and acted on. When we saw that President Obama was viewed favorably by weak-willed, socialist leaders in Europe, we were reminded that in the world's largest democracy—India—you still have an unprecedented 71% approval rating.

The two greatest assets an American president can have are not a majority in Congress or a high likability quotient. Rather, they are the trust of the American people and the respect of our enemies and allies. Unlike President Obama, you understood this. You had the trust of the American people and the respect of our enemies and allies. President Obama has failed to win either. As a candidate, Ronald Reagan asked Americans "Are you better off today than you were four years ago?" The answer then was no. Americans are now asking a similar question: "Were we better off under President Bush?"

Increasingly the answer to this question is yes. Mr. President, we miss you.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned American Citizens
