Tripp Godsey running against John Edwards

As long as I lived in Roanoke, John Edwards was my state senator. He sits on the Health and Education Committee, and would vote down all the pro-life and homeschool friendly legislation I was tracking. He was one of the more liberal members of the state senate. Sadly Republicans weren't able to field a candidate against him in 2007, and he was elected unchallenged.

Thankfully the Roanoke Tea Party found a candidate to run against John Edwards. Tripp Godsey an insurance agent from SW Roanoke has risen to the challenge. The Roanoke Times reports that,
Godsey, 47, described himself as "polar opposites" with Edwards, D-Roanoke. Godsey said he's noticed discontent with Edwards in the business community.

"It was time to step up," Godsey said.

Godsey is a Farmers Insurance agent who specializes in restaurants and hotels. He sits on the board of the Virginia Hospitality and Travel Association. He's married with three children.

Whether he can win or not remains to be seen, but it is important that John Edwards not run unopposed again. Godsey claims to be pro-life, and is at least willing to run against John Edwards. We need to hold every single Democrat in the Senate accountable this election cycle.

Especially if you live in the district check out his website and support him on facebook. Hopefully Tripp is a strong aggressive and conservative candidate. He should at least be supported to hold John Edwards accountable.

UPDATED: Griffith makes it official

From the Roanoke Times:
State Del. Morgan Griffith’s campaign for Congress became official this morning when the Salem Republican filed as a candidate for the GOP nomination in the 9th Congressional District.

Griffith said he sent a letter and $500 filing fee this morning that will make him a candidate for the Republican nomination, which will be decided at a May 22 convention. Griffith already had formed a federal campaign committee and has been lining up support from party leaders in the sprawling district.
Update- Here's the statement from the Griffith campaign:
Griffith Statement on Filing of Candidacy
House Majority Leader files statement declaring intention to seek Republican Congressional nomination for Virginia's 9th District
Richmond, Virginia, 26 February 2010: House Majority Leader H. Morgan Griffith (R-Salem) today issued the following statement regarding his filing of a statement with the 9th District Republican Congressional Committee, indicating his intention to seek the Republican nomination for Congress:
"Earlier today, Michelle Jenkins, Chairman of the 9th District Republican Committee, received a signed statement from me declaring that I will be a candidate for the Republican nomination for Congress from Virginia's 9th District. She also received from me the candidate filing fee, as required by the Convention Call issued by the Committee.
"The acceptance of this form and fee means that I am qualified to seek the Republican nomination for Congress at the 9th District Republican Convention on May 22 at Fort Chiswell High School in Max Meadows.
"The General Assembly is scheduled to be in session for another two weeks, so my duties as Majority Leader will delay a formal public announcement of my candidacy until after we have adjourned for the year."
House Majority Leader H. Morgan Griffith (R-Salem) represents the Eighth District in the Virginia House of Delegates. The Eighth District is comprised of the City of Salem and portions of Roanoke County.

Al Bedrosian Takes on Roanoke Times Endorsed Republican for Board of Supervisors

Al Bedrosian is a long time friend, and a true conservative. If you know anyone in North Roanoke, please encourage them to read this and Vote for Al Bedrosian. Honestly this is similar to the Congressional race in NY-23 this weekend. When the Republicans become liberal, and forsake our party creed and the principles this party is supposed to stand for, it is not only our right, but our duty to challenge them in elections.
____________________________________________

I, Al Bedrosian, am running for Roanoke County Supervisor – Hollins District (North Roanoke County) this Tuesday, November 3rd. I will be running as a conservative write-in candidate – which means I need you to write in my name B-E-D-R-O-S-I-A-N as County Supervisor when you vote this Tuesday

My reasons for running as a write in candidate are as follows:
2 months ago, I was approached to write an article for the Roanoker Magazine about Roanoke County Government. My findings, which were published in the October 2009 issue of The Roanoker Magazine were disheartening to say the least:

- Size of Roanoke County budget nearly doubled in the past 10 years, while the population during that same time only increased by 15%.

- The tax burden per person in the county has nearly doubled to $2100. An average family of 5 has a county tax burden of over $10,000!

- Roanoke County has the second highest Real Estate rate in all of Virginia, second only to Loudon County in Northern Virginia. – that’s REAL MONEY that we pay in our monthly mortgage or mid/end of the year tax bill if you own your house.

- The County bypassed the voters (did not get their approval as they should) and passed an $83 million bond – which included spending $50 million on a new GYM with waterslides in North Roanoke County. Building gyms with our tax dollars, when people are struggling to make ends meet. This is NOT the role of government.

- The current Supervisors voted to accept federal STIMULUS money, with strings attached, to cover up shortfalls in the budget. Federal Stimulus money is money stolen from our children’s future.

The sad thing is that this Fiscal IRRESPONSIBILITY was performed under republican controlled County Supervisors!! Everything listed above is directly opposed to the Republican Creed of Virginia which calls for lower taxes, and government involvement ONLY when it cannot be done by the private sector.

Unfortunately, I uncovered these items after the Primary in June, 2009 so was unable to run in the Republican primary and remove our so-called Republican supervisor in the Hollins district. I did however approach
Mr. Flora and ask him politely to step down and let a true Republican/conservative run for office. He refused. I took this issue up with the republican leadership, but they showed little interest. I thought there was really little I could do until the final nail in the coffin occurred this past week, THE ROANOKE TIMES endorsed Mr. Flora, our current Hollins Supervisor.

When a liberal newspaper endorses a Republican over a democrat start getting VERY nervous. The endorsement of the current Hollins County Supervisor by the Roanoke Times has made me say ENOUGH is ENGOUGH. If you vote in the following 6 voting places in North Roanoke County, I am asking for you to write in B-E-D-R-O-S-I-A-N as County Supervisor. PLEASE SEND WITH A personal NOTE TO YOUR FRIENDS….Let me know if you are in the district and would be willing to vote for me. I will be voting for Republicans: McDonnel, Bolling, and Cuccinelli

You can reach me on
Facebook.

WE have less than a week to get this message circulated among conservatives in North Roanoke County!

-Burlington Elementary School – off of Peterscreek Rd.
-Mountain View Elementary School – off of Plantation Rd.

Reagan Conservatives, Your Candidate is not Dead

Don't count George Allen out

Ed Lynch

Lynch is chairman of the Roanoke County Republican Party.

In the wake of the Senate election results in Virginia, George Allen's political obituary is being written ... again. By my count, this is the fifth time political experts have tried to shovel dirt on his grave, prematurely.

In the 2008 presidential polls, which started coming out within hours of the 2006 elections, Allen's name is not even included, although Democratic polls still include Al Gore, John Kerry and Howard Dean. Losing a single election does not necessarily mean permanent exile from presidential consideration.

There is no reason to assume Allen is definitively out of the 2008 race, although his task is formidable. The pundits who are writing him off ignore some pertinent facts.

First, there was no other candidate in the United States whom the national Democratic Party worked harder to destroy this year. Democrats tried to defeat most other Republicans; they worked to savage Allen.

Every part of the Democratic coalition -- the mainstream media, labor, the anti-war left, and both Bill and Hillary Clinton -- descended on Virginia to defeat Allen. Moreover, they did so by using their most vile campaign tactics, making Allen's race almost a microcosm of Democratic dirty tricks.

The Democrats, by their actions, have declared Allen to be the front-runner for 2008, even if Republicans have not yet done so. Allen's opponents are deathly afraid of him, and always have been.

Second, in spite of all of the Democrats' efforts, Allen lost by only about 9,000 votes, out of more than 2.3 million cast. A change of only three votes per precinct, and Allen would be starting his second term as U.S. Senator, and, I might add for those pundits who see a Democratic mandate in the national results, the Republicans would still be in control of the Senate.

Third, it is not cable news political pundits -- least of all the now-discredited Larry Sabato -- who get to choose the candidates for the GOP nomination. That task belongs to hard-working, dedicated Republican political activists, in places like Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and, yes, Virginia.

One Iowa GOP county chair recently called me to ask about Allen. He began by saying, "Lots of us are looking for someone we can really get behind," and he finished our conversation by asking, "So how do I get aboard this train?" Look for Allen to continue to receive invitations to the early primary states.

For Republican primary voters, Allen can come to symbolize the mud-slinging, no-holds-barred, do-absolutely-anything-to-win Democratic campaign of 2006.

It was a year in which some Democratic bloggers openly hoped for another terrorist attack so that President Bush could be blamed and a Democratic majority assured.

Democrats got their majority and created millions of Republican activists looking for the best way to retaliate. Voting for the man whom Democrats tried hardest to defeat will hold a definite appeal.

I do not mean to minimize the difficulty of Allen's task, or excuse the mistakes of his 2006 campaign. But the adversity has immunized him from further personal attack. By 2008, personal attacks on Allen will reek of yesterday's news.

Moreover, he is now the consummate underdog, as he was when he ran for governor in 1993. He can run the sort of aggressive, anti-establishment, insurgent campaign at which he is best.

Allen's political obituary has been written before. In 1979, after he lost his first political race, pundits in Charlottesville wrote him off.

In 1993, after a poor performance at a debate, no less an authority than the then-head of the Republican Party of Virginia gave up on Allen.

And Harris Miller, who ran against Jim Webb in the Democratic primary, tried to pronounce Allen dead and buried on the day of Allen's inauguration as governor.

In fact, 2006 offers an exact parallel from earlier in Allen's career. In 1991, after Allen served one term in Congress, the entire Virginia Democratic establishment collaborated to redraw the state's congressional district lines to deny Allen his seat. And the Democrats congratulated themselves for successfully doing so. Two years later, the Democrats' glib smugness vanished, as Allen returned, this time as governor.

Now, after Allen served one term in the Senate, the entire national Democratic establishment collaborated to smear his character, destroy his reputation and deny him his seat. And they are, once again, congratulating themselves for doing so.

Democrats should have learned to be more careful what they wish for. History sometimes repeats itself.
