Over the last four years I have enjoyed blogging here.  I am too busy to regularly post on this blog like I should if I were going to maintain it.  I also have been wanting to post on other non political topics.  I have recently started the blog WillieDeutsch.com.  Throughout the summer I have enjoyed posting on a wide array of topics.  Some political, but also religious and philosophical issues.  Thank you to the many readers, and the friends I have made as a result of this blog.  If you have enjoyed this blog, I hope you will check out my new blog, and the Facebook page for it.  

Is Mike Pence Running for President?

So far I have tried to stay out of commenting on the Republcian presidential race. It is three years out, and we have more important things to focus on. We need to defeat the healthcare bill, win the Virginia governor's race, and take back the house in 2010. All that said a Mike Pence candidacy could possibly shake up the race, and it seems like he is actually putting his presidential campaign in motion.

In 2008 there was an effort to draft Mike Pence to run for president. Clearly the effort failed. Over the past week I have noticed a number of things that make me wonder if Congressman Pence is running for president right now.

Mike Pence had the biggest presence of any elected official. at the 9/12 march in D.C. Young people with Mike Pence shirts were everywhere handing out cards encouraging people to sign up for e-mail updates on his campaign website, and follow him on facebook, you tube, and twitter. Why would you expend that much energy getting people all over the nation to support you in a safe congressional campaign? They also had rally signs made up declaring D.C. a "Czar Free Zone" that had Mike Pence's name on it. The only elected official I saw who sponsored signs for the rally. Congressman Pence also wrapped up the rally with one of the best speeches on what is wrong with this nation.

When I got home I checked out his campaign website. The video on his homepage is not a video for a congressional campaign. It is possibly one of the most inspiring presidential web ads I have ever seen. In it Pence is referred to as "The People's Champion" "A Voice for Millions of Americans" and "A Counter Punch to the Left." This kind of soaring rhetoric about major national issues is rarely used in congressional campaigns.

When I saw the video I felt it was pretty obvious Mike Pence is running for president.

While Congressman Pence has not yet filed the papers to form a presidential campaign committee, he has a half million dollars and rising in his congressional account for a very safe house seat, he is on every media outlet possible, and has made trips to Iowa.

This weekend at the FRC Action Conference we will probably see for sure whether Mike Pence is running for president. One of the highlights of the conference is the strawpoll. If he has an operation there to try to win the strawpoll, it should be clear that he is taking this seriously. The other interesting dynamic will be the responses the crowd has towards Pence and Huckabee. Both of them are similar in that they are dynamic speakers, unafraid to talk about their faith who appeal strongly to social conservatives. If Pence wants to make a successful bid he needs the Huckabee supporters. From his perspective either Huckabee needs to not run, or he needs to annouce early enough that he is endorsed by an overwhelming amount of social conservative groups and thereby sideline Huckabee. The dynamics between two eloquent social conservative potential presidential nominees will be interesting to watch at the FRC Conference this weekend.

Tonight I saw Gary Bauers newsletter. It focussed on Mike Pence's speech about the Joe Wilson controversy. Gary Bauer concludes the newsletter he sent out days before the FRC Conference by saying, "I urge you to keep an eye on Mike Pence in the future." If Gary is hinting at who he might support for president it will be interesting to see where other social conservative leaders begin to lean, and who they eventually endorse.

Cuccinelli: Thank You-What a Weekend!

Dear Fellow Virginians,

First and foremost, I want to thank every single person that came to the convention this past weekend - it was a raging success in every way.

I appreciate the hundreds of volunteers that made our victory this past weekend possible, the thousands of Virginians that had sufficient faith and trust in me to not only give me their vote, but to spend all day Saturday to do it, and the thousands of other Republicans that gave our whole ticket a huge bump coming out Richmond!

Say what you want about conventions, primaries, etc., they are tons of fun, exciting and a great way to get several thousand people fired up for five months of campaigning!

Second of all, I need to extend compliments to John Brownlee and Dave Foster. I have been involved in GOP politics as a volunteer and a candidate for 18 years. I don't ever remember such a high quality, issue focused, party contest as the one the three of us just finished. None of us can take credit for that by ourselves - we all share it.

We had innumerable debates and candidate forums, and the level of debate was exceptional. We had so many debates that John finally started joking that we could all give each other's speeches. I think he was right!

John and Dave brought strong resumes and strong campaigns to this contest, and each of them have graciously offered their support and assistance. I'm going to need it!

I'm going to need your help too! The first help we need is donations. Our Democrat opponent has $900,000 more on hand than we do (he was unopposed for the Dems' nomination). Won't each of you please donate today?!? We have some catching up to do!

Friday Night - Gala and BBQ

I appreciated the opportunity to speak at the Restore the Founders' Vision PAC BBQ on Friday night. I'm told there were 750 people there, though I could only see about 50 because the lights were 6 feet in front of my face blinding me. But there was no missing the response the crowd had to protecting the constitution and defending Virginia's sovereignty under the 10^th amendment. Wow!

I think people may be waking up, and we need them to if we're going to win in November.

Then I shot back to the Gala to join Teiro and talk up delegates after Gov. Romney finished his remarks. Talk about packed, they had to set up tables in the hallway! That's a great problem to have - overcrowding! Look out Dems!

Then came the suite...

The Sweet Suite

Okay, can I just say that you people are ravenous cannoli eaters? It was all gone in something like 30 minutes in the suite. My girls must make good cannoli (I wouldn't know, I didn't get any...)!

We also had to reorder food SIX times! They had to keep all the cooks late to keep up with our ravenous hoard. We packed the Hilton ballroom through much of the night, and people were very patient as I tried to get to talk to everyone in line (thank you all!).

At the doors of the ballroom, our volunteers were giving folks a Cuccinelli for AG sticker on the way in, and they went through over 2500! Zoiks! There were a lot of folks there Friday - very impressive.

Needless to say, I was getting a good feeling Friday night.

I also have to say, the Hilton was awesome. Just awesome. I don't like the price tag for the suite ($15,000 - donate please), but they did everything we asked of them fast and happily. Everything about the Hilton beats out the Marriott: bigger rooms, faster and friendlier service, accommodating as they could be, and better food.

Saturday

A confession: I hadn't finished my speech before Saturday (and I was up until 2 a.m. Friday night working on it after the suite), and I wrote it with variations depending on circumstances.

So, I grabbed breakfast in the AFP suite in the Hilton ballroom, and started talking folks up. Teiro went over to the RPV breakfast to chat with delegates (talk about a trooper, Teiro was Wonder Woman all weekend).

Then Teiro and I worked our way down the street to the coliseum, chatting people up along the way. We finished our waters outside (grrrrr), and went in and split up to keep chatting with delegates. This continued until speakers started coming out and it became rude to talk during speeches...

That's when I went into our war room to finish my speech during Hannity and McDonnell's speeches.

After practicing downstairs once, I printed out the speech and then went into the halls to work delegates. I was also in the coliseum when the nominations committee report was read, and the explosion when we were announced as a candidate gave me rising confidence (I was ready to vote by noise-meter).

Eventually, it was my turn to speak, and we started with the unusual audio clip and the flags. I approached the podium toward the end of the audio clip and noticed the clock was WAY below where I had expected it to be. Where I expected it to read about 10 seconds gone, it read 40 seconds gone.

So, I was immediately in speech-cutting mode, before I even opened my mouth. Whoops. What had happened was good old fashioned miscommunication. It had been my understanding that my 10 minute clock started running when I set foot on the stage, but it started when the audio clip started. Regardless, I knew I didn't get to argue it at that point! Ouch.

So, while I was giving it, I was cutting the speech on the fly. I was also enjoying the view, the flags, the people, and the energy was almost visible. Looking back, that view was truly something, and I'm very grateful for the memory.

I wrapped up my speech with a few seconds remaining and the noise was deafening. Teiro came out and then the kids... which led to the next either miscommunication or whatever, not sure. The kids were on stage only about 15 seconds and the noise was still going when they started announcing Dave to speak.

Now, this bothered me in two respects, first of all, it wasn't fair to Dave, as Teiro and I were herding our kids off while Dave had to navigate through all of us to get started and I doubt it was the kind of "clean," i.e., unimpeded, start that he had planned or wanted. Second, that was the ONLY thing the kids were publicly involved in, and I don't mind saying that I was upset that in their one moment, they were shoveled off stage so curtly. Oh well, they did enjoy it, so that was good, and we know the production folks were just trying to keep things moving.

Then came the craziness of voting and counting, and I had a strong sense that we were going to be okay on the first ballot.

Because I'd been totally focused on getting the votes needed to win, it was only at that point that I started to think about what I would say in an acceptance speech.

Then I was informed that some of the results were coming back in and John and Dave had decided to move for nomination by acclimation. This was a gracious gesture AND it saved people a LOT of time, as the counting clearly was going to take a while! Their remarks were very kind.

In the meantime, all was chaos back stage. It was a real scramble back there for the production folks, while I was relaxing with all of my family members that had come to Richmond and jotting down some quick thoughts for my remarks. By the way, please send in those postcards that I know you all took home from the convention!

Then came the acceptance speech - I tried to keep it as short as I could - and then it was rah-rah time with the whole ticket!

A thousand thank yous to people passing on the way out was not enough, but it had to do, as I was nearly numb from the day.

We went back to the hotel, gathered our thoughts and our kids, and went out to dinner. During dinner I got a phone call with a speaking opportunity at 1 p.m. THE NEXT DAY in Williamsburg, and so I took it, and we were off again!

What a whirlwind! Thanks again to everyone that came to the biggest convention anywhere in the free world in the last 15 years, and thanks to those who supported me for the nomination, but now I need to ask everyone for your support, as we can only win with a LOT of help from now through November.

Adnan Barqawi explains what it means to be an American.

One of the convention highlights was Adnan Barqawi. He is a recent Virginia Tech Graduate who was a part of the Cadet Corp. He and his family immigrated from Kuwait when he was 17, and he explained to the convention how he fell in love with this country, and what it means to be an American and live the American dream.

"I do not call myself an Arab-American or a Middle Eastern-American, but an American. Some Americans need hyphens in their names, because only part of them has come over, but when the whole man has come over heart, and thought and all the hyphen drops of its own weight."

Please listen to this truly inspirational young man. It will brighten your day.





He was such a popular speaker that a group has already popped up for him on facebook that already almost has 200 members. This young man has a bright future ahead of him. Thank you Adnan for reminding the convention what it means to be an American and the importance of personal responsibility.

Amy Frederick no longer running for Delegate

In a recent letter, Amy Frederick announced she will no longer be running to replace her husband Jeff Frederick in the VA House of Delegates. In early February she and her husband announced she was exploring a bid for the House of Delegates.

Dear Friends:

Since first beginning to explore the possibility of campaigning to represent the people of the 52nd District in the House of Delegates, I have been humbled by the support and encouragement I received from across eastern Prince William county, and indeed, beyond. Having been honored to stand by Jeff's side for the past six years as he has served, I have had the opportunity to meet and get to know many of the people of this district. They have made this job a rewarding experience for both of us, and the lasting friendships will always remain.

Today, it is with mixed emotions that I announce my withdrawal from the race to succeed Jeff in the House of Delegates.

Unfortunately, some in the leadership of the Republican Party have demonstrated a greater interest in playing politics than in advancing our conservative principles and making life better for the families and the citizens of Virginia. I'm not interested in running for office to serve under broken leadership, where the Speaker compromises principle for what he perceives as immediate political gain. What so many entrusted with leadership in our party fail to recognize is that ignoring our core principles in pursuit of titles and power without purpose is exactly the behavior that severely reduced our ranks in the House, handed the Senate to the Democrats, and has resulted in one statewide loss after another.

Although my campaign ends today, it has been a pleasure to travel around the district and introduce myself as a potential candidate to so many wonderful people.

I want to first thank my friends and family for supporting me and encouraging me to run. I also want to thank Kris Morris and my supporters, who have spent hours volunteering on my behalf. To these people, I will remain forever grateful.

I'm excited about the future, and I will be working hard to make sure that people of principle who share Jeff's and my commitment to service are elected and re-elected this year. I'm confident that in years to come, our party will have new leadership and a new direction, which will bode well for fresh, new ideas -- and ultimately, handing our children a better Commonwealth than the one we inherited.

According to a comment by Amy on facebook she believes Rafael Lopez will be the Republican nominee for that seat. As of yet there noone has filed from the Democrat Party to run for the seat.

It will be very interesting over the coming years to see what the Frederck's do in party politics. I can't imagine they are done for life.

On another note, so far it seems noone is trying to challenge Pat Mullins for RPV chairman. The vote on the matter by state central is on Saturday, and if someone decides to challenge Pat, then we will have a vote at the state convention May 30th.

Rally for Jeff Frederick

The Hotel is located off Interstate 64 in the Innsbrook area. Follow the directions on the Marriott Website carefully. The Hotel is located behind a line of trees. When turning on to Dominion Dr. the Hotel is on the left.

We will be meeting in the back of the Hotel at 8:45 am Saturday morning. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided. Jeff will be addressing us at 9:15. The State Central Committee will begin their meeting at 10:00. The meeting is CLOSED. Although we do not believe a meeting of this importance should be closed, that is the rules and being the individuals that we are we will follow and respect the rules.

Please continue to call your State Central Committee member and encourage them to NOT override the majority of our party who attended last years convention and elected Jeff as our Chairman with over 60% of the vote. In our society the majority rules not an elite few. We do not believe that any elections should be overturned because some do not like the outcome.

Please come to Richmond this Saturday to show your support for the right of every Grassroots worker in our Party to participate in the election of our State Chairman without being concerned that our choice will be overturned.

Virginia's GOP Chairman Under Fire and Fighting Back

Frederick Under Fire It frequently seems to happen to chairmen of state Republican parties, particularly when they are conservative: Charges are flung that the chairman is abrasive and doesn’t get along with key leaders in the party. Weak fund-raising results and defeats at the polls are inevitably blamed on the man or woman at the party helm. Soon some well-known party figures (who are inevitably well-heeled or are elected officials) begin calling for the head of the GOP chairman.

This is what happened to former California State Republican Chairmen John McGraw and Shawn Steel a few years ago and, more recently, to Arizona GOP Chairman Randy Pullen, who narrowly survived an attempt to purge him at the state party convention in January. And now it is happening to Jeff Frederick, a 33-year-old state legislator who is Republican state chairman of Virginia.

In recent weeks, 58 of the 77 members of the GOP state committee have either signed a petition or written letters calling for the head of Frederick, who ousted then-State Chairman and former Virginia Lt.Gov. John Hager by a wide margin at the state party convention last summer. Two weeks ago, six state senators and five Old Dominion Republican U.S. House members weighed in against Frederick. Last week, certain 2009 Republican gubernatorial nominee Bob McDonnell called for the embattled state chairman to step down.

Frederick Fights Back

In filing a statement of intent to remove Frederick as chairman, his enemies list ten charges against him. Three of the charges concern Frederick’s management of Republican Party finances. The other seven deal with alleged infractions of party rules.

In the category of financial mismanagement, for example, one charge against Frederick is his “failure to transmit, in a timely manner, online contributions made to the Republican Party of Virginia and processed by his own company.” The fighting Frederick pointed out as part of a detailed response to every charge that while waiting for a vendor to complete work on the party’s new website that included a mechanism for on-line donations, he had established a “place holding” website through his own firm GSX Strategies, Inc. and also used the firm’s on-line donation company and subsidiary, ChargedContributions.com. This was, Frederick explained, for a period of 91 days.

In a letter to supporters dealing with this and all the other charges, Frederick explained that “it was my hope I could respond to the charges without distributing them to a large audience.” But, he noted, his hopes of dealing with the charges exclusively within the 77-member State Central Committee were dashed “when my critics turned them over to the Associated Press.”

The embattled chairman also noted that, even though Barack Obama became the first Democrat to carry Virginia since 1964 and that the state has two Democratic senators for the first time in 37 years, the state GOP raised more than $1 million during his first seven months as chairman.

In the coming weeks, there will undoubtedly be a confrontation between Frederick and his enemies before the State Central Committee. The chairman has made it clear he will not resign and, privately, organizers of the “Dump Frederick” effort concede they do not have the two-thirds committee vote necessary to oust him.

If he is forced out or resigns, several names have been mentioned as potential replacements for Frederick, among them former Loudon County Party Chairman Randy Minchew, former state party official Shaun Kenney, and Northern Virginia businessman Earle Williams, who lost a bid for the Republican nomination for governor in 1993. Not one, however, has made any concrete moves toward waging an actual race for chairman.

When I pressed one of the Frederick’s foes about who he and his allies had in mind as a potential chairman if the incumbent goes, he said: “No one yet. We haven’t thought it through that far. Right now, getting Frederick out is the main idea.”

Is the Executive Committee Pushing this, and not State Central?

During the beginning of this week, two of Jeff's most vitriolic detractors on the blogosphere, The Contemporary Conservative, and Loudoun Insider, referred to an article they believed was the best case for why Jeff Frederick should resign as RPV Chairman. As someone who reads most of what is being said about the issue online, I read the article. Even without comparing the piece to the vitriolic things that have been written by those leading the effort to remove Jeff, this was a very well written article.

The article is written by Col. William Flanagan, a party activist and RPV state central member from the 4th district. In it he responds to some of the reasons people have used when e-mailing him in support of Jeff Frederick. In the second paragraph he details how he came to sign the letter. He states that he didn't vote for Jeff at the convention, but tried to work with him afterwards. Here is the money quote describing the pressure used to get him to sign the letter.

In late November, just before the Republican Advance, I was asked to support his removal. I declined and advised against it. Since that time, more things have been brought to my attention. Only after separate meetings at the end of February, with three members of the Executive Committee and detailed questions and answers, did I sign on to ask the Chairman to step down or to be removed.

As a member of state central this party activist didn't see anything to justify removing Jeff by the Republican Advance in December. This was months after the website and budget issues had occurred, and a month after the general election. As a member of state central who wasn't predisposed to Jeff Frederick who couldn't find anythign worth removing him as chairman. It took three meetings with executive committee members, and the disclosure of things presumably not included on the letter to convince a former Hager supporter to sign the letter to remove Jeff.

State Central members have responded indignantly to the accusation that the effort to remove Jeff isn't a grassroots effort by saying that state central members are elected as well. However this story begs the question, are they acting independently, and how many of them originally wanted Jeff to resign? Is this really an effort by state central or a move by the executive committee? If these people were agressively talking and persuading people to help them remove Jeff, did it take a couple meetings with our elected officials to bring them on board?

Those trying to remove Chairman Frederick are insistent that this is a grassroots effort. If they believe this, I dare them to prove it. How many people did y'all have to persuade with unreleased information in private meetings to gather the support? How many people joined the effort of their own free will? Since Bob McDonnell was the first elected official to call for Jeff to resign, was he involved in any of the persuading?

These are all questions that need to come out as the RPV decides whether or not the man who was overwhelmingly elected by the grassroots will remain the party chairman. If this information is released soon, it will be found out eventually and released, and I can only pray it doesn't further destroy the party the McDonnell/Bolling ticket was supposed to unite.

11th District Congressional Committee on Jeff Frederick

Yesterday the 11th District Congressional Committee tried to pass a resolution to support Jeff Frederick from office, but failed to pass it.  

Crystal Clear Conservative broke the story, and Mason Conservative has some excellent points about it.  If a resolution like this can't pass in NOVA, how can the executive committee claim to have overwhelming grassroots support for removing Jeff Frederick as RPV chairman?

Party Activsts Declaring this a Race for the Future of our Party

I am excited to announce that Mason Conservative is now on board. At the beginning of the month he posted to regretfully ask for Jeff to step down. At the time it was one of the most pro-Jeff pieces I had seen on the internet. Now we are excited to have him as a partner in the "We Support Chairman Jeff Frederick" movement.

That's what has finally changed my mind, because a stand has to be taken. If its not Frederick, it will be the next outsider/grassroots conservative that makes a run for the top that will be torn apart... If I roll over on Jeff Frederick, then there will be more of these purges from these establishment puritans who don't want activists, independent thinkers, people who care more about what the activists say and less about what the leadership, the lobbyists, and the consultants say... This move by the state central committee is a slap in the face to people like me who work hard at the grassroots level, who went to that convention and voted for Jeff Frederick.

Without referencing Jeff Frederick, James Atticus Bowden described the grassroots vs. establishment fight that is occurring in VA, and argued for a rise of Constitutional Republicans.

Removing Frederick is More Important Than a McDonnell - Bolling Win?

If we all just kick back for a minute, and try and understand the current political situation of the VA GOP...

Yes, it's Ugly... Lost both US Senators, elected a Democrat President for the first time in over four decades, and lost the VA General Assembly Senate...

The only glimmer of hope is that LG Bill Bolling decided to work with AG Bob McDonnell instead of against him... to unify Republicans.... yet who is Chairman of the Party is reason for a group of folks to send the party back into nuclear meltdown?

Chairman? Oh, I forgot, Chairman are supposed be lapdogs... Sitting around waiting on their masters to hand feed them an agenda, and words to repeat...

Maybe it's even a little more.... maybe there are some tax increases, or other party planks that need bending in our future? Maybe having a strong chairman to protest against them would be embarrassing, or just flatout inconvenient?

Jeff Frederick Update: Growing Grassroots Support, and Please sign the Petition

Over the past week the grassroots movement in support of our party chair has continued to grow. Last Monday a rather mean spirited facebook group popped up calling for Jeff Frederick to resign. The following day I began a facebook group supporting Jeff Frederick. Within four hours the group supporting Jeff Frederick grew to have a membership 70% the size of the opposition, by midnight the group supporting Jeff had about sixty more people than the other group, and right now Chairman Frederick's facebook supporters outnumber his detractors 215-133.

On Wednesday the Augusta Co. Republican Committee became the second committee to pass a resolution supporting Jeff Frederick. Two of the three counties to pass resolutions along these lines have passed them in favor of Jeff Frederick. After results like these, I am working very hard to keep myself from making sarcastic remarks at Bob McDonnell, Eric Cantor, and others who claim they represent the grassroots on this issue.
